Net Zero?

The definition of net zero is that in a years time you essentially create as much energy as you use.

This house is being built to be very energy efficient. I am anxious to see our electric bills. But we are not producing energy. We have mentioned to the electrician that we want to build in the option to connect to battery power. This way we could generate some stored energy (from wind or sun) and potentially become a net zero home.

I hope when this project is complete we can collect and provide some data that shows the added cost and time is met with energy savings as well as general satisfaction with the non-drafty, crafted home. When we grew up, houses were solid, well-built homes. I hear designers refer to “good bones”. We all need to build and leave good bones for future generations.

I would like to think this home will be loved and lived in for decades to come. Be it our family or someone else’s. Right now we are just enjoying the process.
